The Prez Sez:

Greetings Fresno Cycling Club members and friends.

We are definitely going through some trying times these days, but it hasn't held us back from getting in daily rides when we can.

Our Ride Calendar is still active, and there are several groups that connect on Facebook and Facebook Messenger, organizing daily and weekly rides for all levels.

Check them out if you want to join them.

The Rough Draft

September 2021

Your Membership Renewal Date:

Last month, we had to cancel the Kirch Flat Century and rides. Ride Directors Mike Quiroz and Yvonne Moreno had rescheduled the event from its original date in May,  and they felt trying to do the ride in August might work even though August is normally hot. Preparations were made and everything was set to hold the event. Unfortunately the ride had to be canceled due to the fact that for some reason there were only 40 riders registered.  Although heat wasn't going to be an issue, the bad smoke may have been a contributing factor. All those registered were given full refunds. It will be rescheduled for May 7, 2022 and we hope it will be a go.

The Kirch Flat ride may have been canceled but that didn't deter a group of our members from heading to the coast to have a great ride in cooler weather with no smoke. The annual ride from Cayucos to San Simeon and beyond was led this year by Liz Pianetta.

This has been an unusual year-and-a-half for all of us, but let’s keep positive and try our best to make the best of the situations we find ourselves in. The key is the health and safety of everyone. If we continue safe practices for getting together, we will all get through this. Please keep checking our various social media groups and email to know that status of future FCC events.

Keep the rubber side down. See you on the road.

The Prez,  Dennis Ball

COVID and Fires Oh My!

On the horizon, we have 5 events in the planning stages for members and non-members to attend.

For members and guests we have the FCC Filipino American Racing Team(“FACT”) 15-year celebration Padyakan Ride/Annual FCC Picnic on Saturday Sept 11, 2020. There are nearly 100 attendees registered as of Aug 31,2021.

There are going to be three rides available for those who want to get a ride in before lunch. The picnic will be in the covered pavilion where we have had the New Years Day ride. Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 FACT 15 Year Padyakan Ride & Annual FCC Club Members Picnic

As of August 31, 2021 all California National Forests have been closed due to the fires in the state until Sept 17, 2021.

We will be monitoring this development closely to determine how to precede with our events that may be affected.

Anyone who has signed up for a Club ride this year that has to be canceled will receive a full refund.

The additional events are:

  •    The Grizzly Century Road and Gravel Rides are scheduled for Saturday Oct 2, 2021, with pancake breakfast starting at 6:00 am at the North Fork Town Hall in North Fork California. This year the Griz is excited to add the Growling Grizzly Metric Century (up Central Camp road). Register now at  Fresno Cycling Club - THE 26TH ANNUAL GRIZZLY CENTURY & RIDES.
  •    The Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century, also known as the Bass Lake DC is scheduled for Saturday Oct 9, 2021 with an official start time of 6:30 am from Homewood Suites (Hampton Inn) 835 Gettysburg Ave Clovis. Ride Director Gia Parker is taking her event-directing skill set to the next level by taking on the challenge of coordinating the 16th edition of the Bass Lake DC. Plans are taking shape and the registration is open at Fresno Cycling Club - Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century 2021. If you are a double century rider, or you want to challenge yourself for the first time, the Bass Lake DC is a fun, well-supported ride with beautiful countryside views and two lakes to ride around.
  •    The Tour de Femme is scheduled for Saturday Oct 23, 2021 starting at 8:00 am at New Covenant Community Church, 1744 E. Nees, Fresno. For the first time in club history, we are sponsoring an all women/ladies/girls bicycling event. The event Director Janet Lucido is planning an awesome event and guess who is doing all the work? The men, who will be staffing the rest stops, and SAG. This is going to be a fun event so be sure to register soon at Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 FCC Tour de Femme.  This event is a fundraiser with proceeds going to Exceptional Parents Unlimited (EPU). •    The Everyone Loves Raymond Gravel Rides are scheduled for Saturday Nov 6, 2021 starting at 7:00 am from Footman Park, Road 600/Road 606, in Raymond, CA. This is the third edition of a ride that has proven to be a super fun event. The Footman Park venue makes for a great festive atmosphere and the meal afterwards is awesome. But the fun really happens out on the course with three different challenging rides to choose from. Registration is now open with early registration discounts to the end of the month. CLUB MEETING - Cycling Advocacy

It has been awhile since we have had a club member meeting. So, when I was contacted recently by our Advocacy Director Tina Sumner, we thought what better way to get back together than with the opportunity to provide input on the planning phase of several different agencies’ transportation infrastructure.

After a few phone calls she was able to arrange to have this meeting in Clovis at the Council Chambers on September 22, 2021 at 6 pm. This meeting will be a chance for us to gather as a club as well as having the opportunity to have some significant input of future Bicycle/Active Transportation infrastructure throughout our area.

Local Bike Shops and Other Friends

For many of us, eating and riding are the two major things in life.  We all rely on and support our local bike shops.  These are the people dedicated to making sure that we can all safely enjoy what we do.  A few local restaurants and other supporters go out of their way to accommodate cyclists.  Please be sure to support these folks, and tell them you are an FCC Member!
