The Prez Sez:

What a great September! We had a fantastic turnout for the 15th Annual FACT Celebration,  which this year we combined with the Annual Club Picnic. There were over 200 members who attended and had a great time on the rides.

The FACT team put on a great lunch, with an array of Filipino foods.  Also, Michael Stevens barbecued delicious tri-tip. It was great to see everyone in person, something that we haven’t been able to do often over the past year and a half.

A Busy Month

October is here so I hope you’re ready to do a lot of riding! Because of the pandemic, most of our Club-sponsored rides have been jammed into October.

  • The GRIZZLY CENTURY & GRAVEL GRINDER is coming up October 2nd.  Unfortunately, the Cal Classic moved its event to the same date as the Grizzly, which will reduce the number of riders. We will still have a great ride, and the weather is going to be great. This year we added a great gravel route to expand the route offerings. We will have 80+ riders split evenly between road and gravel. Register here: Fresno Cycling Club - THE 26TH ANNUAL GRIZZLY CENTURY & GRAVEL RIDE
  • The BASS LAKE POWERHOUSE DOUBLE CENTURY will occur the following Saturday, Oct 9, 2021. This ride will have close to 100 riders. Not a bad number considering the pandemic has taken its toll on many rides this past year and a half. With a slight addition to this year’s route, it will now be closer to 200 miles, at 198 miles. Register here: Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 BASS LAKE POWERHOUSE DOUBLE CENTURY
  • On October 23, 2021, the TOUR DE FEMME will debut, having been postponed last year. This ride is geared to women only, with men serving as the domestiques, working SAG and Rest Stops. This is going to be a fun event which will focus on providing a great ride with great support. There will be over 100 riders on this event. You can still register here: Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 FCC Tour de Femme
  • On Saturday November 6, 2021 the third Annual EVERYONE LOVES RAYMOND GRAVEL ride will occur. The ELR team has been diligently planning to bring our riders an awesome event. Gravel events have become very popular over the past few years. These rides are adventurous, challenging, but laid back, fun events. The best part is they deal with very little if any vehicular traffic. This year’s riders get long sleeve T-shirts that have been so popular for the ELR, socks, and new this year will be offered at extra cost ELR Hoodies. You can register here: Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 Everyone Loves Raymond Gravel Rides Hosted by the Fresno Cycling Club

Member Meeting

Last month, we had our first Members’ Meeting in several years. This meeting was an opportunity for bicyclists to have a voice in how transportation infrastructure is designed to accommodate bicyclists.  There were representatives from:

- Fresno Council of Governments (COG), who represent all of the communities in Fresno County. They were seeking input on future traffic infrastructure designs for Fresno County, and what types of improvements bicyclists want and need.
- A member of the Measure C Committee gave a presentation on the opportunity to have input on the ways that Measure C tax proceeds will be spent on bicycle infrastructure and maintenance. As a Club, we need to keep our eyes and ears on this next measure!  We’ll be asking for your input.
- Clovis Transportation gave a presentation on their Active Transportation Planning, which includes bicycling infrastructure. We were able to have input on this planning, and our Advocacy Director Tina Sumner is following this closely for us.

FCC Board Meeting

Wed,Oct 6, 2021

6:30 PM

Marco's Pizza

Herndon & Armstrong

(also via ZOOM)

It is important to take advantage of these opportunities to have input. The more people in attendance the more impactful we can be. With over a thousand members, it should be possible to have at least 100 or more bicyclists concerned enough about future infrastructure planning who can attend these meetings.  Instead, just 20 attended this one. The only reason we have the infrastructure we do now is because there were hard-working members and a dedicated Director of Advocacy in Nick Paladino, who tirelessly attended the necessary meetings to get plans in place that are today coming to fruition. The planning occurring today will be the roads of tomorrow!

Quarterly Member Meetings?

In recent years, the FCC Board has struggled with the future of regular in-person Club meetings. It seemed that while monthly meetings were popular in the past, attendance had dwindled. The Board discussed having quarterly meetings rather than monthly meetings. Of course, the recent pandemic has not allowed any kind of meetings.

Going forward, is there a desire by our members to have quarterly meetings? It is nice to get together on occasion to discuss issues relevant to our sport, the operation of our club, as well as just an opportunity to meet one another on common ground. I would appreciate any and all input from our members on this or any issue at

Annual Board Member Nominations & Election

October is the annual nomination month for the Fresno Cycling Club Board members. Board members serve annually. The positions that are elected are:

  • President (currently, Dennis Ball)
  • Vice President (open)
  • Secretary (currently, Janet Lucido)
  • Treasurer (currently, Elida Gonzalez)
  • Newsletter Editor (currently, Bill Reddington)
  • AB Ride Coordinator (currently, Mark Locatelli)
  • CD Ride Coordinator (currently, Henry Pretzer)

If you or someone you know wants to serve in one of these positions, you can send your nomination to Elections will be held in November.

Time Trial Events

I want to thank Richard and Hollie Gabel, Natasha Reilly of TC3, and others who helped administer this years’ Time Trial Event Series.  The Club has been sponsoring the Time Trial events for a number of years (over 12 that I am aware of). They are fun events that pit the riders against the clock on a 10 mile course. It is a great way to gauge your conditioning throughout the riding season. The TT series generally runs from April through September and is held at the Belmont – Academy 5 mile out-and-back course, or the Friant Road 5 mile out-and-back course that starts from Friant and goes south on Willow.

Fresno Cycling Club 60th Birthday

In 2022, we will be celebrating 60 years of the Fresno Cycling Club! We have come a long way since 1962. It would be great to have input from our long-term (and short-term) members on ways to celebrate this momentous occasion. One idea is an Anniversary Kit (jersey, cycling shorts, etc.), another could be an anniversary ride on Feb 7, 2022, the official day of our incorporation.  All ideas welcome!

I want to give a big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers, without whom we could never provide the many great bicycling events that we do. Unfortunately, this year has been rough on our volunteers, due to the pandemic causing all our events to get pushed into the fall months.  Come on out and see if you can help.

That’s all for now. See you on the road.

The Prez, Dennis Ball

Local Bike Shops and Other Friends

For many of us, eating and riding are the two major things in life.  We all rely on and support our local bike shops.  These are the people dedicated to making sure that we can all safely enjoy what we do.  A few local restaurants and other supporters go out of their way to accommodate cyclists.  Please be sure to support these folks, and tell them you are an FCC Member!
