THE PREZ SEZ....

Well, that is it for Summer!  Now, it’s on to Fall with a great line up of cycling events and rides in store. But first let's recap what happened in September.

Grizzly Summary

For the second year, the Fresno Cycling Club assisted the North Fork community in putting on the Annual Grizzly Century for its 25th edition. Sometimes it’s hard to believe how long rides like the Grizzly Century, the Climb to Kaiser, the Bass Lake Double Century and others have been going on. The Grizzly has a reputation for being a challenging, well supported, beautiful fun ride, and we do not want to see it go away. Although the ridership was down a little from last year, it was still a great event.

The Volunteers from both the North Fork Community and members of the Fresno Cycling Club put on an outstanding event. The riders were treated to some great weather, plenty of rest stop treats and a delicious after-ride Tri-Tip meal. This year the ride was moved up a few weeks in an effort to get more riders, but that didn’t seem to have a positive impact. It seems riders doing the Grizzly are accustomed to doing it on the first weekend in October. Next year’s Grizzly event will be held on October 3, 2020, so mark your calendars and plan to ride!

Tour de Fresno

The Tour de Fresno, in its 11th edition, had another fantastic event. The Tour de Fresno also experienced a drop in attendance but had a great event for those that showed up on ride day. Fresno Cycling Club had many members involved in this ride. FCCs Killer Bee riders were in full force with riders doing the Century, Metric Century and the 50 miler. They were easy to spot with their Killer Bee Jerseys and Kits. The FCC FACT group was also well represented with riders doing the Century and Metric Century and there were many others in FCC kits out there. Great to see our members having a fantastic time riding and enjoying themselves.

Lighthouse Century

Another great September event that is heavily attended by Fresno Cycling Club members is the Lighthouse Century held by the San Luis Obispo Bicycling Club out of Morro Bay. This is a popular event on the central coast and attracts riders from all over California and beyond. Like FCC, the SLOBC puts on great, well-supported events for cyclists. The beauty of the coastal route never disappoints.

 Board Meeting

The October Board Meeting will be on Wednesday October 2, 2019 at 6:30 pm, at the Me N Ed’s Victory Grill 4010 N Cedar.

 October Events

Now for what’s coming this Fall. Here is the Fall lineup of bicycling events put on by the Fresno Cycling Club as well as our friends at Bike Monkey:

As fall comes, the days get shorter and it limits our evening rides. In the past we have had rides that went out to Friant and back with the use of lights (front and rear), and we hope to continue those if members want to ride.

Rider alert!!

There seems to be an issue with rocks occurring regularly in the bike lane on Auberry Road, north of Copper Ave,  going through the Eucalyptus grove. There have been incidents of riders having accidents caused by the rocks. This is an area where riders tend to ride in pace lines and it makes it hard to see the rocks in the bike lane especially in low light situations. The rocks appear to be pavement breaking up and being sluffed off by the cars, but rumor has it that someone is placing them on the bike lane to sabotage riders. Be on the lookout for someone doing this and also be vigilant as you travel through this area.

Board Election

October is here, and it's that time of year when we hold nominations for the elected Board of Director positions.  The elected positions are:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Editor
  • A/B Ride Coordinator, and
  • C/D Ride Coordinator.

The A/B Ride Coordinator position is open, while current Board members for the other positions have expressed a willingness to continue to serve as Board members.

Of course, anyone who is interested in serving in one of the positions is encouraged to step up and let us know.  To be nominated for a position, just submit an email to the secretary at secretary@fresnocycling.com. Nominations will close at the end of October, and voting will take place in November.

That’s all for now. See you on the road.  The Prez,  Dennis Ball

THE FCC Thursday Night Taco Ride

October will likely be the last Taco Rides until next Spring. These rides from Enzo’s Table are becoming very popular.

We meet at 5:45 pm and roll at 6 PM. There are currently 2 ride offerings; from Enzo’s to Friant and back; or from Enzo’s riding the Circuit CCW.

The start location was changed as there is less traffic to deal with and there is ample parking.

Local Bike Shops and Other Friends

For many of us, eating and riding are the two major things in life.  We all rely on and support our local bike shops.  These are the people dedicated to making sure that we can all safely enjoy what we do.  A few local restaurants and other supporters go out of their way to accommodate cyclists.  Please be sure to support these folks, and tell them you are an FCC Member!
