THE PREZ SEZ....

Greetings Club Members and fellow bicyclists!

October has been a great month for bicycling. The weather has been nice and there were plenty of rides to participate in, both organized (paid) and freebies(calendar club rides). The month of October had the Bass Lake Double Century and the Hammer Rally, two local paid events, both of which were very well attended.

Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century

Congratulations to Angelo Quitorio, the Filipino-American Cycling Team (FACT) and all our great volunteers for providing an outstanding ride experience for all the Bass Lake Double Century riders. It was the 15th edition of the BLDC and Angelo did a superb job of running that event, and highlighting its history. There  were trophies to riders who had ridden BLDC continuously year after year from 5 years, 10 years and some even 15 years.

From Angelo:  At the conclusion of every significant endeavor comes the assignment of credits. And so, after the successful staging of the 15th Anniversary of Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century, it is my privilege and honor to express on behalf of Fresno Cycling (FCC) and the Filipino American Cycling Team (FACT) my sincere and profound gratitude to all those who in one way or another contributed to this event.

Special credit goes to the following sponsors for their generous support and contributions:

  • Rubber Soul Bicycles
  • Steven’s Bicycles
  • Yosemite Bicycle & Sport
  • Hammer Nutrition
  • Giordana / Gita Sporting Goods
  • PepsiCo
  • The Pines Resort

Likewise, the following staff and personnel deserve special mention for their dedication:

  • The Filipino American Cycling Team
  • Rest Stop Coordinators and their volunteers
  • SAG, Radio Communications Team
  • Medical Team
  • Route Course Markers, Registration, Timers
  • Road Hazard Signs Deployment Team
  • Photographers
  • The Clean Up Crew
  • Food Delivery Drivers
  • Members who housed and hosted our out-of-town riders
  • And the amazing full moon!

It goes without saying that the BLDC staging is a team effort and the harmonious collaborations of the various teams ensured the success of our endeavor.  THIS IS A PROUD MOMENT FOR US.

The BLPDC website, as well as their Facebook page include many pictures from the event, so check them out.  We'll also be getting links set up on the FCC website.

The Hammer Rally

The Hammer Rally was run a bit differently this year. Held in the Shaver Lake area with routes up to Kaiser Pass, it was a very challenging ride.

According to Carlos Perez: We made some major changes to this event by moving deeper into the Sierra. With a new start/finish venue at Shaver Lake, riders went up and over Kaiser Pass, exceeding 9,100' above sea level. If that's not enough, we included two genuine gravel road segments to grab your adventurous spirit. Both hard and extra-hard routes were timed with awards going to the top competitors in various age/gender categories.

Something that Ed Lund would have loved!

Board Meeting

The October Board Meeting will be on Wednesday November 6th, 2019 at 6:30 pm, at the Me N Ed’s Victory Grill 4010 N Cedar.

We are excited to bring to the Fresno cycling community Everyone Loves Raymond, this organized and fully-supported gravel grinder bicycling event.  It is so named as it starts and finishes in the town of Raymond in Madera County. The event will have three routes to choose from, the Pint (35 miles), the Growler (60 miles) and the Kegger (90 miles). The routes are designed to be mostly gravel with some asphalt involved. There will be camping available at the Raymond Community Park, the start/finish location.  There will be day of event registration available for cash only. Ride includes fully stocked Rest Stops, SAG and an after-ride meal.  Find more details in the links, above.

"Bike For a Healthy California"

I’m Dave Bodick, a Health Educator with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Office (NEOP). We are launching the new “Bike For A Healthy California” special Interest License Plate.  I am contacting bike clubs throughout California regarding its availability. The license plate is a special interest license plate for motor vehicles currently registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This includes cars, trucks, motorcycles, vans and trailers.

The purpose of the license plate is to create a funding source that will allow NEOPB to further its mission of promoting healthy eating and physical activity.

The DMV allows 12 months to take deposits on 7,500 license plates. It is crucial to capture the audience’s attention during the initial launch to take advantage of their enthusiasm. I’m requesting your help in raising awareness and publicizing the availability of the plate to club members and others who may be interested.  This has been a long process to get to this point, I don’t want it to stall now.  Please visit our web site for complete details https://calbikeplate.com/ .

FCC Annual Christmas Party

Every year the Fresno Cycling Club hosts an Annual Christmas Party for the purpose of getting the club members together for fun and fellowship. It is a great time for getting to meet other members, chat with the ones you know and also find new riding partners. There are always some terrific stories to hear about the great riding we have been doing all year.

This year the Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at 3:00 PM at the Fresno Breakfast House, 2085 W Bullard Ave, Fresno, CA 93711.  Dinner will be catered and includes Chicken, Rice, Pilaf, Salad, Roll, Dessert, Tea/Coffee, Water and Sodas. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

Registration is required. Seating is limited to 130, so be sure to register early!

Board Election

The election of 2020 FCC Board Members will be conducted this month via our website.  Everyone eligible to vote will receive an email with voting instructions. Watch your email for the voting link! The elected positions are:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Editor
  • A/B Ride Coordinator, and
  • C/D Ride Coordinator.

The A/B Ride Coordinator position is open, while current Board members for the other positions have expressed a willingness to continue to serve as Board members.

Please take a moment to vote, even if it’s just to show your hard-working Board members that you support what they are doing for the Club.

Local Bike Shops and Other Friends

For many of us, eating and riding are the two major things in life.  We all rely on and support our local bike shops.  These are the people dedicated to making sure that we can all safely enjoy what we do.  A few local restaurants and other supporters go out of their way to accommodate cyclists.  Please be sure to support these folks, and tell them you are an FCC Member!
