The Prez Sez...

Happy New Year 2020!

Greetings Club Members and the cycling community.

Happy Birthday Fresno Cycling Club

As the Fresno Cycling Club embarks on its 58th year of existence, I am proud to represent our club as its President going into my 8th year. I appreciate all of the support of our Board of Directors who have stood with me over the past 7 years and have helped our club grow and serve the cycling community. With all our great volunteers, the club has been able to provide an abundance of rides for our members as well as the cycling community. We appreciate all our Ride Leaders who provide leadership for all our club rides on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Also all our Ride Directors who have been putting on all our event rides. The Club has certainly gained a lot of notoriety for putting on well supported rides. We also appreciate all our Bike Shops who have added their support to the Club and our activities, and have been sponsoring store rides and including them on our club calendar for all riders to enjoy.

2019 FCC Christmas Party

If you missed the 2019 FCC Christmas Party, you missed a good one. This was the first time that we opted for venue that provided a catered meal. The Fresno Breakfast House was a fabulous venue and delivered a delicious meal. Great job VP Diana Millhollin for changing things up. Rather than the usual raffle, Diana had each of the Bike Shops and others put together gift baskets of goodies that attendees could choose which basket they wanted to try to win. It was a lot of fun and the winners made off with some great prizes.

Next FCC Board Meeting

January 8th, 6:30 PM

Victory Grill, 4010 N Cedar Ave.

New Year's Day Muffin Ride

If you want to get 2020 off to a great start, what better way to do it than the Annual New Year’s Day ride. As in the past, the ride will start at Steven’s Bicycles parking lot (northeast corner of Willow and Nees). This year we have to change the route a bit, due to the road construction on North Willow. The ride will start at 10:00 am, and head out to Lost Lake where the Killer Bees Group will be hosting the Rest Stop. They will have the usual goodies including, coffee, hot chocolate, muffins, and other munchies. Look forward to seeing everyone out there.

Climb to Kaiser “C2K”

Registration for the 2020 edition of Climb to Kaiser has opened. As usual, this will be a timed event, and there will be special pricing for Fresno Cycling Club members. This year’s C2K will occur on the last Saturday of June 2020.

Valley Girls Ride

Under the Direction of Club Secretary Janet Lucido, the Valley Girls (women only) ride will return on May 23, 2020. The Fresno Cycling Club is excited to bring back this ladies-only ride which inspired so many valley women to ride their bikes. Stay tuned for future details on training rides and registration information.

We have a bright riding future ahead of us. Let’s all ride safe and ride legal and support our leaders and encourage them to support bicycling in our community.

See you on the road,

The Prez,  Dennis Ball

Request from Mark Perkins, Club Historian:

I am seeking information about a past club member from the 70's, Glen Turner.  Glen Turner built several custom bicycle frames during the mid-70's, and I am resurrecting one of them, which was once owned by the late Jerry Timberlake, past owner of The Big Wheel Bike Shop.  In the process I've found a need to learn more about Glen's frame building days.  Glen lived in Clovis, was a member of the Fresno Cycling Club, and worked as a Pattern Maker at Valley Foundry & Machine Works.  He passed away on August 8, 1976.  He was a good friend.

I know of at least 5 owners of Glen Turner bicycles (including myself).  One of those bikes was ridden in the Paris-Brest-Paris ride in the early-80's, by Suzanne Lock, past F.C.C. president and creator of the Climb to Kaiser.  I have 5 Turner frame serial numbers, and they indicate that Glen built at least 22 framesets -- I believe more.  If you own a Turner frame, or you know of someone who owns one, please contact me or have them contact me at 707-274-7126 -- I am simply looking for information, and hoping to put together a list of the frames built by Glen Turner.  Thank you

"Bike For a Healthy California"

I’m Dave Bodick, a Health Educator with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Office (NEOP). We are launching the new “Bike For A Healthy California” special Interest License Plate.  I am contacting bike clubs throughout California regarding its availability. The license plate is a special interest license plate for motor vehicles currently registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This includes cars, trucks, motorcycles, vans and trailers.

The purpose of the license plate is to create a funding source that will allow NEOPB to further its mission of promoting healthy eating and physical activity.

The DMV allows 12 months to take deposits on 7,500 license plates. It is crucial to capture the audience’s attention during the initial launch to take advantage of their enthusiasm. I’m requesting your help in raising awareness and publicizing the availability of the plate to club members and others who may be interested.  This has been a long process to get to this point, I don’t want it to stall now.  Please visit our web site for complete details https://calbikeplate.com/ .

Local Bike Shops and Other Friends

For many of us, eating and riding are the two major things in life.  We all rely on and support our local bike shops.  These are the people dedicated to making sure that we can all safely enjoy what we do.  A few local restaurants and other supporters go out of their way to accommodate cyclists.  Please be sure to support these folks, and tell them you are an FCC Member!
