THE PREZ SAYS.....

Greetings fellow club members, happy October.

September is over and it's on to October. September was a great month starting out with a fun Birthday ride to honor many of our members, even the Club President. We had a good turn out and had a fun ride from Steven's Bicycles parking lot to Highway 168 and Old Millerton Road, where we enjoyed the new pavement on Old Millerton Road. I have really enjoyed the success of the monthly birthday rides, however there won't be a dedicated birthday ride in October due to the Tour De Femme and Club picnic occurring this month on Saturday Oct 25.      Also occurring in September was The Lighthouse Century and rides, an annual favorite put on by the San Luis Obispo Bicycling Club. It has been a favorite of many Central Valley riders for years, and this one was no different. Our club was well represented at the ride, on each of the four lengths of rides. If I had to guess I would say possibly 75 to 100 FCC members were in attendance among the 1,000 or so that were there. The weather was perfect for a nice coastal ride, overcast but warm enough that you didn’t need a jacket.

     OCTOBER EVENTS

So, what's on the agenda for October? We will start off with the Grizzly Ride on Oct 4th. Although the Club isn't putting on the Grizzly anymore, we still support the ride which supports the Charitable organization The Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, it has been a long-standing October ride for many years. I will be doing a gravel ride. Register at: https://thegrizzlyride.com/

Next on the October agenda is our very own 20th Annual Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century happening on Saturday October 11th, 2025. Once again, this year we are featured in the California Triple Crown Stage Race, 3 days, 600 miles, 45,000 feet of climbing in three Double Century rides. Register at: https://fresnocycling.com/event-5895263. This year we are offering a 20th year commemorative jersey and vest for anyone to purchase at: https://fresnocycling.com/event-6364095.

To cap off October we will have the Annual Tour de Femme and Annual FCC Picnic together on Saturday October 25th at Clovis Hills Church. https://fresnocycling.com/event-6016777. See story below.

A BICYCLE CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

Here is a story that many of riders can relate to. "Elias had been trapped in the stressful city grind—long hours, sedentary work, and a stern warning from his doctor about his health. He decided his only path forward was the neglected, dust-covered bicycle in his garage.

His first ride was brutal. Lungs heaved, muscles burned, and he almost quit on the first hill. Yet, leaning on a park bench, he realized the air was fresher, the sounds were clearer, and the chronic stress knot in his shoulders had loosened just a fraction. He got back on, embracing the rhythmic push-and-pull of the pedals as a new, comforting heartbeat.

Over the next few months, Elias made cycling his ritual. The gentle, continuous motion-built strength, was easy on his joints, and his doctor noted a significant drop in his blood pressure and resting heart rate. He was literally strengthening his cardiovascular system with every mile.

But the greatest gains were mental and emotional. The rides became his time to process stress and clear his mind. He arrived at work energized and focused, replacing his short temper with a resilient optimism. He found a welcoming community in a local cycling club, replacing solitude with camaraderie.

One year later, Elias was lighter, stronger, and healthier than he’d been in a decade. Bicycling hadn't just made him physically healthier; it had been his therapy, providing clarity and connection. He realized the simple magic of turning human energy into forward motion was the key to reclaiming his life and well-being."

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF THE

BASS LAKE POWERHOUSE DOUBLE CENTURY

We are pleased to announce that this year’s Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century will take place on October 11th and will be part of the California Triple Crown Stage Race.

As Ride Director, it is my distinct honor to welcome participants to this remarkable 200-mile cycling event. This year represents an important milestone—the 20th anniversary of our club’s stewardship of this distinguished double-century ride.

     Acknowledgements

I extend my sincere gratitude to our dedicated volunteer team. Such a large-scale event would not be possible without your commitment and hard work. Special thanks are due to all volunteers, the essential Carp radio personnel, exemplary SAG (Support and Gear) teams, outstanding Rest Stop Teams, and everyone who contributes behind the scenes. Your efforts ensure the safety and motivation of every rider throughout the course and are central to the success of this event. It is truly a privilege to collaborate with such an exceptional team.

We also recognize those whose vision and leadership established this event. Our deepest appreciation goes to Ride Directors Ron Quitoriano and Richard Hoff for laying the groundwork for one of cycling’s most esteemed journeys. Their foresight has significantly contributed to the legacy we celebrate today. In addition, we acknowledge Ride Director Angelo Quitorio for his crucial role in providing structure to the Bass Lake Double Century, thereby ensuring its continued excellence each year.

     Honoring Our Achievers

The Fresno Cycling Club is proud to count among its members some of the sport’s most accomplished individuals:

  • Roehl Caragao—celebrating his 154th double century this year and was induction into the CTC Hall of Fame 2025

  • Richard Hoff—achieving 200 double centuries completed in 2023

  • Ranay Franklin—completing her 100th double

  • Tom Taylor—reaching his 50th double

  • Gary Egorov—notching his 37th double

Your dedication and achievements set a high standard and inspire the entire community.

     Looking Ahead

The Bass Lake Double Century offers more than distance—it is a transformative experience that challenges every participant. As we mark two decades of this event, we also look forward to hosting the Triple Crown Stage Race, which serves as one of three stages contributing toward the prestigious California Triple Crown. The pursuit of the California Triple Crown Hall of Fame continues to motivate many of you.

We anticipate many more years of exceptional cycling, memorable challenges, and collective accomplishments. Thank you for your ongoing support and participation.

SACRAMENTO BIKE RIDE NOVEMBER 7, 8, & 9

AUTUMN IS HERE. That means that it is time to go to Sacramento to have a great ride on the American River Bike Path and watch the salmon run. We will be staying at the Best Western Sandman Motel, 236 Jibboom St, Sacramento CA 95814 (Ph# (916) 443-6515), and this will be our starting point. We will be arriving on Friday the 7th, and then on Saturday the 8th we will be riding to Folsom via Nimbus. Distance is 35-50 miles. The ride starts at 8:30, so you can just drive up for the day. Lunch is at a wonderful café, Karen’s. Lunch may vary depending on weather conditions and sunlight. Everything is homemade. Possible ride on Sunday the 9th, if there is enough interest. You can always stop at the Ghirardelli chocolate outlet on the way home. You have earned it. Lots to do for non-riding family members (yes there is an IKEA and an outlet mall), also a Museum next door to the Hotel.  Old Town Sacramento is within walking distance. Please call or e-mail to confirm that you are coming. Ride will cancel if no response by Wednesday the 5th. More Information?
