THE PREZ SAYS.....
Your Club membership shows you are an avid cyclist or at least want to be. Bicycles come in various types, including two wheels, three wheels, road bikes, gravel bikes, hybrid bikes, cruiser bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes. The bicycle stands as one of humanity's most significant inventions, enduring through the years and profoundly impacting lives. Its versatility allows for use in transportation, physical exercise, or leisurely rides at any time of day. Whether riding across the country or around the block, the choices are vast. Notably, since 1956, May has been designated as National Bicycle Month. May was filled with bike rides, fellowship, and even a somber ride. Let’s continue the momentum throughout the year.
The 35th Kirch Flat ride started from a new venue at Clovis Hills Church this year. The new starting point added several miles to the longer routes, and some riders took on the challenge of completing 117 miles to Kirch Flat. The ride now includes an 85-mile route with hills and a flatter metric route. The venue has a covered pavilion where participants can rest after their ride and enjoy meals and conversations. Appreciation is extended to the new Kirch Flat ride Coordinator/Director, Sarah Mata, and the volunteers for organizing the event and providing support. The club has been consistently hosting these bike rides for many years.
The Ride of Silence is a global event to honor cyclists injured or killed in collisions with vehicles. This year, 80 riders participated to remember those lost or hurt and raise awareness among motorists to share the road and avoid distractions like cellphones. Cyclists should follow road rules and ensure visibility by using taillights, headlights, wearing bright clothing, and always wearing helmets.
Our club has been active for nearly 64 years. First as a racing club then in the 70’s it became more of a recreational club for the whole family. In the late 70’s the Climb to Kaiser now in its 46th edition (excluding a year off for Covid-19 in 2020 and a snowed-in pass in 2023) was the first of many rides that have lasted so long. The Kirch Flat has run for 35 years, the Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century for 20 years, Everyone Loves Raymond gravel ride for 7 years, and the Tour de Femme for 5 years. This longevity reflects our dedicated members who work hard to create great bicycling opportunities for the cycling community.
The Memorial Day ride had over 50 riders participating to honor Veterans who are serving, those who have served, and those who gave their lives. There were four different levels of rides, from A to D. Attendees recognized several veterans present and observed a moment of silence for departed Veterans.
The 46th Annual Climb to Kaiser and Tollhouse Century rides are on Saturday, June 21, 2025. It's crucial to train for this ride. Some aim to finish within the time limit, while others focus on speed. Forecasts predict mid-90s temperatures, which would be ideal for riding. You can buy Mark Perkins' book on the first 38 years of Climb to Kaiser at this year's event. Mark, a long-time club historian and member, will be there with discounted copies that he can sign for you.

CLIMB TO KAISER VOLUNTEERS
The 46th Climb to Kaiser is happening on Saturday, June 21st. We have volunteer opportunities for members and non-members. Even those riding the event can help us out if they have availability the day before or the day after the event. You can register for a particular job or, if you are not sure what to select, you can choose a day, and we will contact you to review possible options and what works with your schedule.
Volunteer Opportunities include:
Shopping for the rest stop supplies on Thursday, June 19th.
Pre-event set-up on Friday, June 20th. On Friday, we have volunteers marking the course, putting out signs, helping us retrieve items from storage, making the "ice run" to Costco, sorting supplies for the various rest stops, and rider registration.
Day of the Event, June 21st. Things kick off early with a two person crew to place road signs along the course. We also need help at the Rodeo Grounds with the post ride meal, clean-up and loading items onto trucks or trailers for delivery to the storage unit the following morning.
The Day after the Event, June 22nd. On this day, we return the bike racks, tables, pop-ups, and so on, back to the club storage unit. There are other miscellaneous jobs as well.
Register here to help with this historic Fresno cycling event.
