Fresno Cycling Club - April 2023

Rough Draft

April 2023

Welcome to Spring

Greetings lovers of the two- and three-wheel modes of transportation referred to as the “bicycle/tricycle.” Not only are these great modes of transportation, but they are also a great mode of freedom. Freedom to get out on the open roads and trails, to travel near and far. Bicycling is an awesome sport and fun way to help keep yourself healthy. Let us continue to enjoy our passion to make new friends and riding partners.

This year is certainly starting off different than we anticipated! Due to Covid concerns in 2022, we changed our events to dates that wound up being bunched together in October 2022. So, for 2023, we made plans to spread out our events to take pressure off of our volunteers, without whom we couldn’t provide the great cycling events that we do.

It seems Mother Nature had other ideas for our best-made plans. The severe storms so far this year have caused us to postpone the Everyone Loves Raymond Gravel ride, not once but twice due to expected extreme weather events on both selected dates. The weather proved to be worse than we would have been able to tolerate. We were fortunate that on both occasions, we were able to switch the dates with our venue and vendors intact. We are hoping for a great ride on April 1, 2023, the forecast is looking good.

Also, due to road closures, we had to postpone the Kirch Flat Century rides originally scheduled for March 25th, with a new date of May 6th, the first available date.  So, instead of our events being bunched up in October, they are now bunched up in April and May for this year.  We are just thankful that we were able to reschedule our rides, so we can provide our riders the rides they love.

To continue to put on all these great rides, it will require an infusion of new volunteers that are passionate about putting on our great rides. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to make these rides happen for the benefit of our club and our bicycling community at large. Some of our rides attract riders from all over the country and even the world. To keep rides going over the years it depends on members who are willing to step up and assume leadership roles to learn the process of putting on events and seeing them through to a successful conclusion. I would encourage our members to volunteer to assist our many Event Coordinators and learn the jobs so that when the time comes, they will be able to take the reins.

See you on the road or in the dirt. Ride safe and ride legal.

OUR PAY-TO-RIDE EVENTS

Over the past 61 years the Fresno Cycling Club has been putting on some pretty spectacular bicycle rides. Those still standing are the following pay-to-ride events:

  • The Annual Kirch Flat Century & rides - next longest at 33 years (35 if not for Covid19)

OUR FREE-TO-MEMBER RIDES

The following is a list of free to members rides that have been on-going for several years.

  • The Annual New Year’s Day Ride - Now referred to as the Annual Muffin Ride - in honor of Past Club President - Diana Herrington, who with her daughter Kendia and husband Ken would prepare and serve muffins and other goodies for the rest stop at Lost Lake.
  • The Annual Monterey -17 Mile Drive Ride - sponsored by VP Janet Lucido and husband Jim.
  • The Annual Cayucos Ride to San Simeon - Led by Nancy Dooley
  • The Annual Tour de Lakes Ride

PADYAKAN RIDE & FCC ANNUAL PICNIC

Last year we (FCC & FACT) decided it would be fun to combine the two traditionally separate events, the Padyakan Ride - FACT event and the annual FCC Picnic. The reason was to help celebrate the FACT (Filipino American Cycling Team) 15-year anniversary, since they are a subgroup of FCC for the past several years. It was such a great event that we decided it would be fun to do it this year. Last year’s event we put on at no cost to the participants.

This year however, due to the increase cost of everything, it is necessary to charge a fee of $20 per person. This helps cover most of the food costs, SAG gas, and event insurance. The event is scheduled for Saturday April 29th. Please register if you plan to attend so we have an idea of how much food to prepare. TIME TRIAL SERIES

Time Trial Season continues this month.  The next date is Sunday April 16, 2023, and the Webscorer link to register:

Webscorer LInk for FCC

If you love “time trialing,” or even if you have never done it before, you will be excited to learn that FCC Member William Haines has volunteered to take the leadership role in coordinating this years' Time Trial series. William had been involved in riding the time trials for several years and offered to take over the lead. He has some innovative ideas he wants to implement to make the monthly events more attractive to riders.

Time trialing is a terrific way to gauge your conditioning.  It is typically a 10-mile course (5 mile out and back), starting at Belmont Avenue and Academy, done as fast as you can. It is a race against the clock. The series schedule will appear in the Ride Calendar and announced on our Facebook pages.

WILD APRICOT FOR MEMBERS MOBILE APP

Fresno Cycling Club utilizes a company called Wild Apricot to manage our club’s membership and financial information. You may not be aware but there is a Wild Apricot “Members App” available to download. It gives you access to the FCC members contact info (phone/email of only those who checked the box to allow inclusion), and also has the following features:

  • shows you upcoming events and allows you to register.
  • shows you which events you have registered for.
  • it allows you to access your membership card (to show if requested for bike shop discounts).
  • it allows access to our new rider Waiver and the Volunteer Waiver.
  • it also allows you to edit your profile.
  • you can show your membership card at The Bike Shop at Woodward, and The Trek Store for 10% member's discount!

To allow your contact info to be seen by other members, log into the FCC website, click on your name in the upper left corner. That will open your profile, click on edit profile, then click on Privacy, then you can select the details you want to allow to be seen. Then click the Save button. This allows members to contact one another to set up rides, plan get togethers, go have coffee, etc.

If everyone will go to their profiles on the FCC website and make these changes, it will make it a lot easy for members to stay in touch.
