Fresno Cycling Club - June 2022

Rough Draft

June 2022

Greetings Fellow Bicyclists and Club Members

I can’t believe June is already here: this year is flying by. What happens in June for the Cycling Club (besides all the great riding we will be doing)? It’s time for the Club’s Premier event, the Climb to Kaiser. This year is the 44th edition, having missed the last two years due to the pandemic.  I am excited to be able to bring this great ride back for the many Cyclists who love a grand challenge, and “the C2K,” is just that.

This year we are excited to be trying out a new start/finish venue. I was able to secure the Clovis Rodeo Grounds in the heart of downtown Clovis.  The Rodeo Grounds provide everything we need: plenty of parking, a dining hall, and a large grassy area for our first ever adult water slide for the after-ride cool-down for the riders.  With typical valley temps in the high 90’s to low 100’s, the water slide should be a welcome addition for the riders.  Be sure to bring a swimsuit or just go in your cycling shorts/bibs after the ride: towels will be available.  Out-of-town or even in-town Riders will also be able to park their RVs in the parking lot on Friday night to be on site-for the early morning start time.

Volunteers are the key to making all our Club activities and events happen: it takes lots of planning to make an event like the Climb to Kaiser happen. It’s amazing that the Club has been able to make this event happen year after year since 1977. The C2K is one of the longest-running cycling events in California.

One of the longest-serving Volunteers I know of is the Club’s SAG (Support and Gear) coordinator Kevin Nehring. He has been involved since 1998 with SAG’ing for the Climb to Kaiser (after several years during which he completed the ride). He knows what it takes to complete the ride, and he knows what the bicyclists need from the SAG drivers. Thank you, Kevin, for your continued service to the members of the Fresno Cycling Club and the cycling community.

The Kirch Flat was well attended this year with a total of over 220 riders attending the five rides offered. After being canceled over the last two years, our folks were eager to get out and ride this great event.  Our volunteers did a wonderful job of working the rest stops, doing SAG, with communications by Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers (CARP), making sure all the riders got back safely. The after-ride meal of tacos, burgers and shaved ice was bomb.

This year’s Ride of Silence had over 100 riders attend the Fresno edition of this worldwide event, to honor those bicyclists who had been killed or injured in collisions with motor vehicles. Unfortunately, this year one of the riders we had to honor was our member Paul Moore, who was tragically killed in a collision with a pickup truck near Woodward Park this past January. This year’s event was coordinated by Melissa Rose, herself a victim of a bicycle-vs-vehicle collision (a hit-and-run on Auberry Road a few years ago). The Fresno Police Department N/E district had Officers on Bikes to help with the ride.

The Assembly Bill AB1713 is making another run at the Idaho Law for California. Go to the link and tell your assembly representative to vote for this bill. Recently released study by NITSA (National Institute of Traffic Safety Association) has shown that this law reduces bicycle-vs-vehicle collisions. Let’s get it done this time. Hopefully this latest study will convince the Governor to sign the Bill. Your support is important to get it done.

REMEMBER YOU ARE ALL BICYCLE ADVOCATES FOR BICYCLE SAFETY! It is reflected in how you ride.  Are you courteous, and do you follow the rules of the road?

See you on the road or on the dirt. Ride safe and legal.

The Prez, Dennis Ball
