Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century

Saturday October 14, 2017

COURSE DESCRIPTION (may be subject to change)

Enjoy the Western Sierra Scenery including Pine Flat Lake and Bass Lake.

The first 70 miles of the course are relatively flat with some rolling terrain.  The course meanders through fruit orchards, horse ranches, vineyards and along the Kings River. Enjoy the view on the almost traffic free roads.

After the 2nd rest stop, mile 72.3, at Winton Park (which is also the 1st rest stop) the climbing starts up to Pine Flat Lake into the rural back country.  The lunch stop, mile 107.4, is at Auberry school in the small town of Auberry.

After the lunch stop there is some moderate climbing out of Auberry before descending to Kerckhoff Lake bridge into Madera County.  Then the most challenging climb is ahead, the infamous "Powerhouse Grade" north bound. As you climb out of the ravine pine trees will start to appear and eventually enter the town of North Fork. It is noted for being geographically in the exact center of California.  To get to Bass Lake there is some more climbing before reaching rest stop #4, the Pines Resort, at mile 131. It is then rolling hills around the beautiful mountain resort lake which is part of the Sierra National Forest. After leaving the Bass Lake area the course descends back down to the Powerhouse station again and climbs back out of the river basin. The next rest stop will be a repeat of the lunch rest stop, Auberry School.  It is there where one is able to pickup clothes or lights left behind.

The final miles will be predominately downhill with some short uphill bumps to the final stop at Millerton store, mile 184.6. It is then less than 20 miles on a slight down hill with a few rollers to the finish.

Time Limit: Please be prepared to check in at each Rest Stop to receive California Triple Crown credit. Moreover, since we are offering “bailout options” along the course, it is going to be imperative to check in at each of these rest stops. Riders not able to complete the course in the required time may be asked to bailout.

We have moved up the starting time to accommodate those riders who need more time but the Rest Stop schedules will remain the same. The course opens at 3:05 A.M. but the first Rest Stop doesn't open until 6:00 A.M. The course will close at 12:00 A.M, no exceptions please!!
